Nutrition advice can come at you from all directions, especially when you tell someone you are trying to lose weight. The constant, contradicting, unwanted and frequently pushy advice can be both confusing and discouraging. Here are some tips for navigating nutrition advice!
Consider The Source
If the information came from a television show, webpage, magazine or book, you should immediately consider the source. Keep in mind that all three of those sources put out information with the goal of financial gain.
Consider The Content
Question the content. Does what they are saying make sense? Or does it contradict basic information that you understand to be true? Don’t hesitate to ask questions. If the advice is sound, it should hold up to scrutiny.
Consult An Expert
If you are seriously questioning some advice and wondering if it is something you should try, consult an expert. Registered Dietitians are subject matter experts in the field of nutrition. If you don’t want a dietitian to develop a customized plan for you, you can still consult reliable resources of nutrition information. Try www.eatright.org or https://health.gov/dietaryguidelines/2015/ for research-based information.
Consider What Works For You
Keep in mind, you have to do what works for you. If a friend tried something that worked well for them, but it sounds miserable to you, it probably isn’t the best approach for you. You have to follow a plan or program that fits in your life and makes sense to you that you can stick with.
