With a growing body of research suggesting wide-ranging health benefits, recent years have seen increased interest in cannabidiol (CBD) as a wellness supplement – as evidenced by the ever-growing number of CBD products on the market. But with any product that becomes so popular in such a short period of time, questions, concerns, and misconceptions are inevitable.

At Olivera Health + Wellness, we are now offering Metagenics brand CBD Hemp Oil as part of our new menu of products and services. And, to help you make better choices regarding your health, we’d be happy to take a minute to lay out the facts on CBD and explore how CBD Hemp Oil can benefit your health and well-being.

Let’s go over the basics…

What is CBD and how does it benefit your health?
Found in the Cannabis sativa plant, CBD is a phytocannabinoid, a naturally occurring chemical compound that interacts with neurotransmitters in the body’s endocannabinoid system.

While the research on CBD is still evolving, the results so far are encouraging. Studies suggest that CBD may be effective in treating a broad range of conditions – from chronic pain and inflammation, to anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders. CBD has also been linked to cardiovascular and digestive health, and has been used to treat the nausea and vomiting that are common side effects of cancer treatment.

What’s in Metagenics CBD Hemp Oil? How is it made?
At Olivera, we offer Metagenics brand Hemp Oil, sourced from industrial hemp and produced using supercritical CO2 extraction. The result is a pure, broad-spectrum hemp extract that includes a range of naturally occurring phytocannabinoids, along with terpenes, natural fragrant oils that are also found in a variety of foods. It’s believed that the synergy between these naturally occurring compounds boost the overall effectiveness of broad-spectrum extracts.

Is CBD Hemp Oil a psychoactive substance? Do I need a medical cannabis card to buy it?
Because it comes from the Cannabis sativa plant, many are left with the misconception that CBD has intoxicating effects, leading to questions about its legal status and wariness about products containing it. But as we will see, not all cannabis plants are alike.

All plants in the Cannabis sativa family contain CBD; the difference is how much tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) they contain. It’s THC that gives marijuana its psychoactive effects – and if a cannabis plant contains greater than 0.3% THC, it’s considered marijuana and regulated as such. Less than 0.3%, and it’s classified as industrial hemp.

Metagenics brand Hemp Oil has a THC content that falls well below the 0.3% threshold, with the latest testing indicating a THC content of 0.018%. It is a non-intoxicating product that can be purchased over the counter in the state of Illinois – no medical cannabis card required.
